Incubate relationships between diverse dance cultures by supporting all artists in an annual celebration of hip hop dance
In the world of dance, street art is wildly underrepresented and underappreciated. Some of our industry’s top athletes include krump, breaking and other hip hop artists. Much like the Delmar divide, there seems to be a line drawn in the sand between studio and street dance. CKDC is determined to blur that line. Not only do we recruit and encourage hip hop artists to crosstrain with us but every year in August we give them a platform to showcase their talents and a chance at winning a cash prize in one of five street dance categories. The Beat Kill Jam, Founded by Raii Morehead in 2010 is a dance competition. Its name comes from the important role that rhythmic proficiency plays in the judges determination of who will advance to the next level/round. The jam attracts nearly 600 dancers and spectators every year including dancers from all over the country who come to compete in our annual battle.
One of the things that makes this event so special is that it is truly multigenerational. Young children all the way to older adults come together in an encouraging hype environment where they feel safe to spectate or compete, at any technical ability.
Our contemporary artists and company administrators volunteer over 12 hours each on event day. Your support ensures that our MCs, DJs and judges will be adequately paid for their time and that we can insure and announce our cash prizes in every category in advance rather than relying on door earnings. Your support helps keep The Beat Kill Jam a safe space and event and can guarantee the winners in every category have something to bring home. Your gift will also help our Beat Kill Jam become a truly impactful fundraising opportunity for our youth scholarship fund every summer, perfectly timed before the start of our fall educational program.
